What animals endure in laboratories is horrible and disgusting. Animals should not suffer so much from unreliable experiments. They are not laboratory equipment that can simply be thrown away. Animals are still living beings and deserve to at least live their lives. Animal testing activists claim that most experiments are not painful for animals, which is far from the case. There is no law that limits the use of animals for testing. The only law today that regulates animal cruelty is the Animal Welfare Act. This law allows the use of animals in all experiments, even if they are painful or kill millions of animals. This law gives laboratories the right to burn, shock, poison, starve, withhold, force-feed drugs, and create brain damage in animals. Even worse, painkillers are not necessary at all. In fact, due to the cost of painkillers and the number of animals labs use. Almost no laboratories use painkillers (“Animal testing is bad science”). This exemplifies the freedom given to laboratories to harm and torture animals. Many people are misled into thinking that there are restrictions on the type of tests performed on animals for experimental purposes. In reality the laboratories have total freedom. The Animals Welfare Act even states that animal testing can occur in the name of science. Furthermore, animals do not need to be under anesthesia to perform experiments. Painful tests are atrocious for animal health welfare. The extent of the damage inflicted on the animals is not even discussed. One of the most common and cruel tests performed in laboratories is the LD 50. The LD stands for "Lethal Dose" and 50 is the percentage of poisoned animals in the test.
