Former President Fernando Belaúnde Terry of Peru first defined the term “narcoterrorism” in 1983. The term was created to describe terrorist-type attacks against Peru's anti-drug police . President Terry used the word “narcoterrorism” to attempt to describe the use of violence and intimidation by drug traffickers to influence government policies. However, the word narcoterrorism has more than just one definition. According to the DEA, narcoterrorism is defined as “the participation of associated groups or individuals in taxing, providing security for, aiding, or otherwise abetting drug trafficking efforts in an attempt to promote or finance terrorist activities.” However, the latest definition of the term narco-terrorism is now defined by the United Nations Security Council as "terrorist groups that rely on narcotics to finance their operations". As I conducted research on narcoterrorism and its history, involvement, and impact, I decided to narrow my focus to the impact of cocaine in Latin American countries, specifically Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico.
