US-Mexico Border Must Change The US-Mexico border has been a common political debate for days now due to the overwhelming flow of illegal Mexicans into the States United. People feel that these illegal immigrants are stealing jobs and threatening security and that the border needs to be sealed and protected from these intruders. However there are many problems with this theory. Some include the dangers of illegal crossing, maintaining such a large border and, the big deal, the cost. The border between Mexico and the United States is always a back and forth situation. At some point the United States allows illegal Mexican workers to come to work for American companies and then they turn around and leave. An example of this is during World War II, as Americans left to go fight in the war, the United States brought in the "Braceros". Bracerosing Mexican contract workers to fill the void. The Braceros had worked in the United States for a couple of years and were making a good living. They had become very skilled at their work and had settled in America. Then the war ended and, after all the work done, the United States implemented the "Operation Wetback" program. This basically said get your things and we'll take you home right now. Now that these jobs have had a taste of American life and the money they can earn, they want to come back, even if it means illegally. Initially this wasn't a big deal, but when the economy started having problems and people started losing their jobs they started pointing fingers. They think that all these illegals are taking their jobs because there are so many of them here and that's because the border is not secure and needs to be closed with bars. Well, that's easier said than done, much simpler. The U.S.-Mexico border is approximately 1,951 miles long. Among all those kilometers there are some real wall boarders. In 1993, President Clinton administered “Operation Gatekeeper” to try to prevent some illegal immigrants from entering America. Along the 1,951 total mile long border they have placed 80 miles of strategically placed border walls. These are in “hot spot” areas where many illegal Mexicans pass through. Now that 80 miles are blocked, 1,871 miles remain. Now most of this unprotected area is desert, miles and miles of desert.
