Topic > Scary Emotions from the Oil Painting Joseph Sturge' by...

In this essay I will talk about an oil painting called "Joseph Sturge" by the artist "AlexanderRippingille". 'Joseph Sturge' is an English businessman, Quaker, abolitionist, activist and leader of the 'Birmingham Anti-Slavery Sociality' created in '1826'. “Joseph Sturge” worked in “radical political” actions in support of pacifism, working class rights, and ultimately the universal emancipation of slaves. Anno 1830 "Joseph Sturge" published books containing information on the apprenticeship system in Jamaica, this helped persuade the British Parliament to adopt an early full emancipation date. Eventually, he would find free villages with "Baptists" to provide living areas for free slaves. It was the location of the painting that made me want to see it and behind that wall so as you walk to the next room you will see it. Also, the way the black guy was positioned made me wonder why he was there because you can see the scary emotion in suggesting that he is scared of what is going on. Furthermore, Joseph Sturge feels no shame, he has a serious expression that suggests he doesn't care. I know the painting is an oil painting because its texture quality suggests that the oil painting looks old but still shows that detail too. . Also you can tell it is an oil paint because of the smell you see each type of painting has its own distinct smell. I can actually see evidence of marks because you can see little lines in the background of the painting which suggest that the curator of the painting executed every line to be successful. For example, you have an image and you enlarge it to the maximum, you will see the s...... center of the paper ……ry”. (Stephen Hobhouse, 2013, p.35)Stephen Hobhouse. (2013).
