Too many peopleIntroductionDo people realize that there is a demographic problem? Can our earth support and support a staggering 5.6 billion people, steadily increasing at a rate of 1.7% each year (Conservation 67). At this rate, 95 million people are added to our world every year. To put this in perspective, every month 11,000 new babies are born, every second three new people are added to the already overpopulated planet (Ehrlich 14). Every person added to the world has a right to food, energy and other resources of the earth. We must also realize that there is no single factor that limits the number of people the earth can support. The increase in population will only exacerbate the problems we face right now, such as food shortages and damage to the environment. The Earth Club, whose members belong to the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, issued this statement in 1988. Stopping global population growth should be second in importance only to avoiding nuclear war on humanity's agenda. Overpopulation and rapid population growth are intimately connected with most aspects of the current human situation, including the rapid depletion of non-renewable resources, environmental deterioration, and growing international tensions. (Ehrlich 18). The human population has increased dramatically over the last two centuries. The earth will not be able to support the growing population due to increasing environmental and economic stresses. We need to address the problem and find workable solutions. Because people are not afraid. To find solutions, you must first realize the problem. Why aren't people aware of the demographic crisis? Until recently, in Cairo, Egypt, where the United Nations International Conference established a dialogue and program of action to address overpopulation, there was little talk about this topic. One of the main reasons why people do not recognize that overpopulation is a problem is its slow development. Over two thousand years ago there were approximately 250 million people. It took 1650 years for the population to double. From then on, the population doubling time would be reduced to 200 years, and would continue to be reduced to a time span of just 35 years. But even with these incredible growth rates increasing, it is impossible to notice these “slow-motion changes” compared to an everyday event (Ehrilich 15).
