Topic > Maternal health: the use of prenatal care

One of the primary prevention methods in maternal health is the use of prenatal care. While providing prenatal care, a healthcare provider advises and discusses information with the expectant mother. Conversations are enacted about smoking and alcohol use, what to expect during pregnancy, when to seek help, and activity limitations (Kirkham, Harris, & Grzybowski, 2005). Discussions about possible complications and potential warning signs are also an important part of prenatal education. Providing supplements such as calcium (1,000 to 1,300 mg per day), folic acid (0.4 to 0.8 mg), and iron (30 mg per day) to an expecting mother is also an important part of primary prevention, as they help in the fight against blood pressure disorders, anemias and fetal defects (Kirkham, Harris and Grzybowski, 2005). Furthermore, vaccination of expectant mothers has been shown to keep mothers and unborn babies healthy during pregnancy. Some vaccines, such as Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough) and inactivated influenza vaccines, have been shown to be protective for the fetus, as the mother's antibodies against the disease are transferred to the fetus (Esposito et al., 2012). .2.2 Secondary Prevention Prenatal care also includes many types of secondary prevention methods for expectant mothers. Keeping a record of the expectant mother's weight and blood pressure during pregnancy to ensure they are within the recommended range helps catch problems early. The expectant mother may undergo blood tests to check for certain genetic markers that could detect certain diseases in the fetus, including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and Tay-sachs disease (Kirkham, Harris and ... middle of paper. .. or by telephone or some kind of computer system. Costs will be an obstacle to many of the recommendations made. The government is serious about reducing the maternal mortality rate and increasing maternal health status, they will have to allocate some funds to the cause. If the government creates regulatory and accrediting agencies to enforce new benchmark policies and transportation issues, it can then charge healthcare facilities for not complying with the policies and generate revenue by meeting the new high standards set by the government, they can then pay to become accredited, which will also generate revenue. Non-governmental organizations should take an active role in social marketing campaigns and educational strategies in local communities, as this will help ease some of the government's burden..
