There are over 2.3 million people within the “Prison Industrial Complex”. The term “Prison Industrial Complex” is used to describe the overlapping interests of government and industry (Herzing, 2005). Industry interest within Illinois state prisons has led to the sale of inmate healthcare rights to many private companies. The privatization of healthcare within the prison industrial complex is unconstitutional and perpetuates the unethical treatment of incarcerated people. These private companies are not held accountable for the lack of care and negligence in providing services within state prisons. While, equality in healthcare delivery in America continues to be ineffective. be one of the main topics of the debate. Health care rights for incarcerated people are largely absent from this national conversation. Healthcare affordability and accessibility to quality care, medicine and doctors remain a priority for all ages, races, genders and political parties. if the power of autonomy is granted with respect to the legal provisions of the federal government, it should be the responsibility of the “State” to provide adequate health services and care to detained persons. The prison industrial complex system operates within the law. The law allows private companies to infiltrate the prison, keeping prisoners in a subservient position. The law, under the Eighth Amendment, requires prison officials to provide “adequate” medical care to prisoners. This principle applies regardless of whether the medical care provided comes from government employees or private medical personnel under government contract (Project, 2012).
