Real or Not Real: A Reality Show for a Change How influential can popular culture be for teenagers? Why is popular culture always redefined by the young adult population? There are many aspects of popular culture that influence how different teenagers view life. Consider Reality TV, which has been glamorized in modern society as “popular.” The image of watching almost real, but in most cases fictional, television programs on TV, instead of the usual scripted television program, especially appeals to young adults, aged 12 to 21, because it gives them the opportunity to imagine their lives with different shoe sizes, because they are able to connect with the main characters of the show. Many argue that reality television influences teenagers' perspective on life because it leads Steven Reiss and James Wilts to analyze reality shows, and through an experiment conducted at The Ohio State University, they have proven to be a good source for young adults to find the motivation to feel important, as well as friendlier, moral-free, secure and romantic. Why has reality TV always been demonized as a harmful inspiration for young adults if it can help personalize a teenager's character? Many do not realize how watching an almost real television program can actually affect a person's personality because teenagers are able to relate to these programs more, thus allowing for a change. Reality television is able to exploit impressions or issues that will most likely be relatable to teenagers, because they are exploiting a teenager's flaws. Teenagers tend to gain more self-confidence because they are no longer under the strict oppression of social standards. Reality shows are able to set a basic but quality standard for teenagers in their structural basis of finding a common problem in society and solving that problem. Most shows are structured this way cultivating a positive social standard thus allowing teenagers to be more confident, lose prejudice-based morality and be more passionate and most importantly, accept themselves. As expected, reality TV is capable of bringing the worst of reality to teenagers to prepare them for a future
