Intention and action for the good of others can only be part of what makes a person good, one must also be in harmony with the will of God to obtain grace. Jesus illustrates what this goodness consists of in his parable of giving to the poor: “But when you give to the poor, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be done in secret; and your Father, who sees things in secret, will reward you" (Matthew, page 177). Reciprocity of action and intent for the good of the other is not in itself sufficient for good in the eyes of Jesus, according to him we must go beyond reciprocity and do things for themselves to achieve the favor of the other.
