New York City Fire Department opportunities include increasing diversity and improving fire prevention and safety education. Increasing diversity is considered an opportunity because it will continue to promote and support recruitment, retention and promotional advancement initiatives of men and women of diverse backgrounds in fire protection, emergency medical services and as civilians working in the Central Division. The variety of differences among an organization's employees is diversity in the workplace. These do not only include differences such as race, ethnic group, gender and age. Personality, motivations, passions, experiences and talent are other forms of diversity that employees have to offer. A top priority of the department is to continue to expand its successful efforts to diversify its uniformed workforce through its recruiting unit and various recruiting programs. The percentage of young men and women from diverse backgrounds entering the Fire Academy is constantly increasing. The department's latest recruiting campaign was a huge success, with minorities accounting for 38 percent of those who passed the written firefighter exam. The newest graduates of the probationary firefighter class represent the most diverse class in the history of the fire department with 35% minority representation. Allowing your employees with diverse backgrounds in fire protection, emergency medical services and as civilians working in the central division to express their views, provides the opportunity to have a broader pool of ideas and experiences including choose. Employees with different backgrounds bring different talents and suggestions to problems.
