As with most literary works, the title Fences is more than just a title. Initially you might notice that there is only one physical fence built by the characters on stage, but what is more important are the ideas that are maintained inside and outside the fences that are built by Troy and some of the other characters in Fences. The construction of the fence becomes quite figurative, as Troy tries to fence off his own desires and infidelities. Through this act of trying to contain his desires and hypocrisies, one might say, Troy finds himself fenced off, trapped between his pragmatic and illusory ideals.
