Stem Cell Research The body is made up of cells, which constitute the basic unit of life. The unique cells found in the body are stem cells. These cells are biological cells that are not specialized for particular functioning in organisms. They can be distinguished as they have the ability to differentiate or divide into multiple cells in the body and their ability to replicate. They are unique in the way they can renew themselves by undergoing cell division when dormant for a long period. In some conditions it is also possible to induce stem cells in organs or tissue cells. When cells divide, they reconstitute the cells of a living organism. They serve as an internal system that repairs and replaces worn tissue.1 Dividing cells can remain as stem cells or specialize in their functions, for example, red blood cells, brain cells, or muscle cells. The unique nature of the cells has intrigued scientists to do research with the goal of finding a way in which these cells can be used to replace patients' injured or diseased tissues. Progress is being made on all three types of stem cells, namely embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells as well as induced pluripotent cells. Embryonic cells are the building blocks of a developing embryo and can develop into almost any cell type in the body. Somatic cells are found in the tissues of the body. They renew and regenerate in healthy bodies. The third induced pluripotent type consists of genetically modified embryonic cells from skin cells.2 Research on these cells is aimed at saving humanity; a noble course. In a recent article, "Destructive Embryonic Stem Cell Research," Father Mark Hodges, the Antiochian Orthodox Christian, argues that human life... middle of paper... flowers are part of the Christian life. community and have a thorough understanding of Christian teachings, but strive to prolong life. The vision of stem cells as a means of preserving life is the driving force. More laboratories should be implemented to provide a stage for further discoveries. It would be a worthy thing for the church to save the lives of its members rather than trying to stick to moral teachings at the expense of lives. Stem cell research must be supported.
