It is clear that treatment with medications is not always the patient's preference. For care delivery to be patient-centered, a holistic approach to care must become standard in ambulatory care. This change would ensure that patients are presented with all available options and allow them to take control of their health. The Journal of Dietary Supplements discusses the growing use of "complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)" and how it is becoming a necessity among physicians to educate and train themselves so that the idea of Integrative Medicine is a realization for the public (Litchy , 2011). This holistic approach allows conventional medicine to be incorporated with alternative interventions that also allow the patient to decide which treatment path best suits their specific preferences. Many hospitals in the United States currently offer holistic treatment methods such as Sharp Healthcare in San Diego. The services offered include; Acupuncture, healing arts, clinical aromatherapy, guided imagery, healing touch, holistic healing, massage therapy, Qigong, reflexology and yoga. All of these methods allow patients to receive an alternative intervention to treat conditions such as; anxiety, pain management and stress. All of these are known conditions that negatively affect the healing process (Sharp, 2014). With all the diversity that exists in the United States, it is typically not the easiest task to adhere to a large population with different preferences. By implementing holistic approaches to care, ambulatory care, home health, physical therapy services, and many other ambulatory care settings can further align services with... patient-centered care standards that includes; a focus on services and interpersonal relationships to increase patient satisfaction, as well as increase the use of holistic approaches and technologies to create a better sense of continuity of care as it pertains to ambulatory care settings. When relating Starbucks and Apple customers to patients in a hospital, patients should always come first. This means that the focus of services and features such as comfort, interpersonal relationships, holistic approaches to care and the use of technology should all become the standard in ambulatory care environments to ensure a patient-centered experience. The result of this may reflect the same for Starbucks and Apple customers, patients returning satisfied and willing to return to the provider because they feel like they came first.
