Face to face communication was much more common and people felt the need to get together and discuss issues in person. Now that cell phones are widely adopted, he meets with others less often and relies on mediated communication as his primary method of communication. Although he views this as positive and finds it convenient, he also finds it difficult to interpret the messages sent to him and has difficulty conveying how he feels when texting or using any other type of instant messaging app on his mobile phone (Yaser, 2015). This idea of having difficulty transmitting and interpreting messages that are sent and received through mediated communication has to do with levels of social presence. Social presence is the “measure of media, arranged on a continuum from high to low, that deals with the 'feel' of communication enabled by particular media” (Mandelbaum, 2015). In this case, the use of mobile phones has a low social presence as important nonverbal cues such as the visual and tactile ones found in face-to-face communication are absent. Since my father relied so heavily on these signals before the use of cell phones, he had difficulty adjusting to the absence of these signals and would have to adapt accordingly. This initially put a strain on the relationships he had due to the misunderstanding that would occur around the use of mobile phones and particularly texting, but he managed to overcome this problem
