Marriage sometimes refers to the happiest time for every couple. However, marriage can lead women to depression. In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, published in 1892, the author presents the point of view that women often suffer from depression from their spouses. Gilman is a famous feminist, who believes that women should receive the same privileges as men. In the story, the woman was controlled by her husband John. John was a doctor and was educated enough to tell his wife what to do about her illness; however, she could not argue with her husband because she was not intelligent enough to reject his decision. Since the disease made this woman a weak person, she also could not physically fight against her husband. The time period of this story is around 1800, so the woman in the story must have the idea of male domination. This traditional idea made this woman afraid to defend herself. By the end of the story, depression has caused this woman to become mentally insane and respect is a major theme in this story. Different levels of education within a marriage will give women a lot of pressure. In Gilman's story, John controls his wife simply by being a doctor. “If a high-ranking doctor and her husband assure friends and relatives that in reality there is nothing but a temporary nervous depression [...]” (154). Since her husband is a medical professional, she cannot retaliate with John regarding his illness. She believes that John's higher education is putting more pressure on her as his wife. This shows that higher education can put pressure on others in a family. Education levels mean that marriage becomes a re... middle of paper ...and of Economics, a theoretical treatise in which it was argued, among other things, that women are subjugated to men, that motherhood does not a woman should be barred from working outside the home and housework, cooking and childcare would be professionalised." This quote shows Gilman's powerful idea of how women should feel better about themselves. Many women think it would be an insult to work as a housekeeper or carer. In my personal opinion, I agree with Gilman's term because I believe that there are no differences between different jobs. The purpose of a job is just to earn money. It doesn't matter how much you earn; the only thing that matters is feeling confident in doing your job as a worker. Therefore, women should not feel depressed about themselves because they can do the same things as men. Works Cited “The Yellow Wallpaper”
