Health insurance, for too many American citizens, is not an option. However, some citizens consider it unnecessary. Working in the healthcare field, I witness the effects of uninsured patients on medical practices. Too often I see a “pay for themselves” patient receive care from their doctor and then fail to pay for it. Overall, their refusal to pay leaves the office losing money and requires patients to pay extra to cover the cost of care received by the uninsured patient. An office visit doesn't seem like an excessive expense, but the number of patients who are unable to pay for the care they receive adds up. Imagine the hospital bills that patients are unable to pay; health services in a hospital cost double, sometimes triple, in a hospital. It is unfair that paying patients are responsible for covering these unpaid services. Fortunately, on March 23, 2010, the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, was passed. Obamacare is necessary in America because it requires all citizens to have health insurance, regardless of pre-existing conditions, and free health benefits for men and women.
