I walk in circles, letting my shadows cancel out the light that filters through the windows.Windows.The windows are high up in this abandoned building. I walk into a room of nowhere. I came here to take a break from the world. That's the only reason you'll find me here. I found this place in second grade while exploring the woods. That's when it became my hideout. I think and breathe here. I'm angry with my mother who decided to get married. Why didn't I get any input? I don't even like this guy. His jokes are horrible and he is irresponsible. One time my mother couldn't come to my football game and apparently told him to come. He never showed up and when I got home at dinner time I asked my mother why he wasn't there. He said, “Chase, Dave was supposed to be there…?” His confused hazel eyes were the color of mine. That's when his phone suddenly rang. His eyes lit up when he answered and it was Dave. She answered him with a stunned yes. "What was that about?" I ask her curiously after hanging up. “Dinner date with Dave! Sorry, no time to talk! He'll be here in thirty minutes!' He practically jumped out of his chair, nearly knocking his plate full of chicken, broccoli, and rice to the floor. He ran to his room. Sometimes, having a single mother is just as bad as having a teenage sister. Then he forgot that Dave wasn't coming to my game. He didn't even ask me who won or what my walk home was like. I finally found a time, when he was picking me up from school, to confront him about it. He came in because I was helping my friends with math. We sat in the hallway. He came over and told me it was time to go and I saw his chocolate brown eyes dart towards my friends like he was plotting to embarrass me. As we walked away, I said... halfway down the paper... something...?" He never asked me again and stopped. Dave shook his head. "I guess being curious can be a good thing?" he said more like a question than a statement. “I saw this building and I was wondering what it was. I got to the door and noticed a pile of scraps had fallen in front of it. And then I found you stupid pile of scrap that's always there by the door! In the end the bench must have given way. I give a warm smile. Maybe I could forgive mom. Dave saved me. I want to tell myself that I could have done it on my own, but I couldn't. “Thank you,” I repeat to myself. He has his good and bad sides, but he's a good man. As long as my mother is happy with him, I think I will be lenient. “You're welcome, gova'na,” he says in a British accent. He just needs to stop doing it. I smile as I think to myself, Yes, as if that would happen..
