Same-sex marriage Marriage is a commitment between two individuals. Definitions of commitment differ from culture to culture, but in America, marriage and commitment mean that it is a contract and bond between two people together that provides them with benefits. The question being raised in America today is whether or not these rights to these benefits and commitments should be extended to people of the same sex. This topic is widely debated in many countries, not just America. It is an important issue because it involves basic human moral and human rights. The first same-sex marriage case was Baker v. Nelson, which was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972, when a Minnesota couple was denied a marriage license by the Hennepin County District Court clerk in May 1970. The Supreme Court's decision stated in an opinion of five pages that the Constitution does not protect the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry” (Denniston). A few more cases were raised during the 1970s, but many movements in favor of same-sex marriage occurred more in the 1990s and 2000s. There were many states fighting for same-sex marriage same sex and win, but in many other states they have not been successful. The first executive order to address this issue was President Bill Clinton signing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). in 1996. This act mandated unequal treatment of legally married same-sex couples. Many Obama supporters were happy that he changed his opinion on same-sex marriage because on the one hand he supported same-sex marriage and on the other he went on stage with the homophobic Donnie McClurkin. Everyone across the nation was celebrating Obama's victory in 2008, but Califo... at the center of the card... becoming a nation free from prejudice and legalizing same-sex marriage would be a step forward. Advocacy I think there are many ways I can support this topic, such as joining a certain group or protesting against equality for all. I might donate or volunteer for places like GLAD, I believe what GLAD is doing is great for the gay and lesbian communities. They help fight for your rights, your HIV status and your sexual orientation. They also help you with things like post-DOMA tax questions. Since I have never advocated anything in my life, but at the same time I know there are many ways to approach this topic. Right now in my opinion and something to start with would be GLAD, because what I read on their main website, their mission statements, I think GLAD would be my best option to help support this topic.
