Religion in Egypt was part of life; they believed in and worshiped many gods. The faith they had in the gods was great and religion was linked to their daily life. Egyptians are known as one of the most religious people in the world. They usually turned to the gods for advice, help and approval in decisions and even to assist during childbirth. The Egyptians celebrated many holidays and it was believed that there was a god for every important event. Some of the gods and goddesses were Osiris (one of the best known), Isis, Anubis and Set... (On the next page there is a list of the Gods/Goddesses and their associations) These deities are some of the best known as they link to some important rituals, for example Anubis, god of cemeteries and embalming; it was always included in funerary practices. Pleasing the Gods was very important; they believed that if they upset them in any way, they would bring bad luck to the Egyptian people. Every day offerings were made to them in the temples where the statue of a certain deity was located. The Egyptians kept a book of the dead. This is a book full of collected writings about where the soul has gone, protection spells, and spells for funeral ceremonies. They believed in an afterlife and in order to "survive" in the afterlife, they embalmed the bodies. The pharaohs were the ones who were usually embalmed.
