Poetry Makes a ManWhen people consider poetry to be more than just words with meanings, but as words to live by and take poetry to heart, the person can and will change by the words they live by. The type of poem will influence how the person changes. In the highly inspirational film Dead Poets' Day, screenwriter Tom Schulman, through the character of the visionary Mr. Keating: uses plays and poetry to help the main characters and even some minor characters through their dilemmas and all the situations that they could have applied to these characters inspired to think freely and take a new path in life. Prominent figures such as Neil, Todd, Knox, Charlie, and Cameron have taken Mr. Keating's influential poetic teachings to heart and used the teachings with their own free minds to make choices that no one else can tell them to make. of the film, the audience knows that Neil is the main character because he is primarily the one leading the kids. Given that Neil has high self-esteem and no lack of confidence among his peers, audiences might assume that Neil will be a static character, but Neil has had his moments too. One of Neil's moments was when Keating first introduces the poem To the Virgins Who Make Much of Time, he connects the poem to the Latin phrase "Carpe diem", meaning "seize the day", Neil is influenced again by he wants to try acting anymore, which is why he forged the letter to be able to participate in the show. To the Virgins Who Make Much of Time and The Road Not Taken are mostly tied together because of the moments Neil has. Neil decides to bring back the Dead Poets Society, which has a mixture of going against conformity and seizing the moment. Then, during the Midsummer Night's performance... middle of paper... and the nerdy student used Carpe diem to build a radio and celebrate with their party for two on the roof. The only other moments that show minor characters using poetry to influence their situations are when the students stand on the desk at both the beginning and end of the film to show a different perspective on each situation. By living through poetry, people can become better versions of themselves, as the characters in The Society of Dead Poets did. Dead Poet's Society can demonstrate to the public that literature and poetry are more than just words, and that people should use them to seize the day, become free thinkers, and take the path in life that people want. Tom Schulman gave the characters Mr. Keating, who uses poetry to make the characters stand out according to their own will in a world where everyone simply follows what others tell them to do..
