The Confederacy of Dummies – written by John Kennedy Toole – is set in early 1960s New Orleans. In A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius J. Reilly, the main character of the book, acquired two jobs after his mother had an accident. He worked at Levy Pants and as a hot dog vendor to earn money to help his mother pay for damages caused by his accident. Ignazio is the following: lazy, greedy and condescending. Ignazio is a lazy human being. After his mother discovered that she owed a lot of money from the damages caused by her accident, she told Ignatius that he should get a job to help her pay. He thought it was inconceivable that his mother would want him to get a job. Ignazio is too lazy to get a job because all he wants to do is stay in his room (48-49). The banner used by Ignatius and the workers was Ignatius' sheet. Since the sheet had yellow stains, none of the workers wanted to touch it; and when they did, they acted as if it were a leper's shroud (137-138). Ignazio's sheets are dirty because he is too lazy...
