Using Conflict Resolution and Mediation to End School Violence Conflicts and differences of opinion exist in every healthy organization. Americans must try to take control of today's youth and the violence that has been developing in this country for many years. While violence will never be extinguished, there are many different ways to reduce it. Every school and every student population has different ways of addressing and helping to curb the need for violence in schools. The most effective and common method of addressing violence in schools is conflict resolution. It has been used in many different states and in different formats to try to give students, teachers and parents an idea of what might help stop or prevent this violence and other problems from occurring. According to the Texas Youth Commission, there are ten main reasons to establish a conflict resolution/mediation program at school. They are as follows:* Conflict is a natural human state that becomes more prevalent during personal growth.* Addressing conflicts at school requires a more effective system than expulsion or court intervention.* The use of mediation to resolve conflicts at school Problems can lead to better communication between students, teachers and parents.* Mediation training helps prepare students to live in a multicultural world.* Shift the responsibility for resolving conflicts from teachers to young adults will allow teachers to concentrate on teaching.* Mediation provides a problem-solving system that is perfectly suited to the personal nature of young people's problems.* Mediation training increases students' interest in issues... ... in the center of the card ......vary according to ethnicity and family income, or geographical location" (Factors, 2). It is obvious that the use of conflict resolution and mediation is essential in our school systems. Not only does it provide a safer way for students to discuss issues; it also gives us a tool to manage the problem of violence in our schools more safely. Works Cited Harberg Consulting Group.
