Semiotics: semiotics helps us understand the meaning of things. It allows us to go deeper than we normally would. It is divided into two words semeion (sign) and logos (story). The sign is divided into signified and signifier. The signified is something else that is represented, while the signifier is anything that stands for or represents anything and the elements. “Every day in most countries, nearly half the population wears blue jeans” (Miller and Woodward 2011). The word jeans comes from the French phrase 'Bleu de Genes' which means 'the blue of Genoa'. Jeans were a cotton twill fabric originally produced in Genoa, Italy. Initially the fabric was used to make cheap trousers. Denim originates from the French city of Nîmes, which is now known as denim throughout the world, this is because the fabrics are named after the geographical place of origin. Denim was a much more resistant and expensive fabric than jeans fabric, it was indigo-dyed cotton, with a white band underneath. It is known that it was originally used as bed curtains for the rich and as clothing for the poor. Around the early 1900's denim was used for workwear, during this time workwear was very fashionable. The most popular work attire for men to wear was dungarees. Dungarees have long been associated with country men and boys such as farmers and railway workers. Americans originally used the suit as a military uniform; they were intended to act as a protective layer of clothing for trousers and socks. Denim later replaced the linen canvas originally used because the twill weaves of the fabric made the suit extremely strong and durable.
