Topic > Analysis of a Bose Advertisement - 948

There is an interesting print advertisement found in an issue of Time magazine. It was an ad for Bose noise-canceling headphones. Bose is known for making high-quality music products such as headphones and speakers. In the ad there is a man in a boat wearing Bose headphones, rowing a boat and about to go over a waterfall. The waterfall he is going to is Niagara, known for being very noisy. Niagara Falls is a well-known tourist attraction and is probably the best-known waterfall in the world. It's a clever way of showing how the headphones cancel out all external noise. Additionally, in the top right corner is text that says "Bose Noise Headphones" and an even smaller caption that says "Bose Noise Canceling Kills." The advertisement uses a really interesting way to show the target audience that by using these headphones you can continue your usual activities without having to worry about distractions. I think Bose did a great job using location, color, and humor in this ad to grab the reader's attention. Location is very important in this advertisement because it is used to highlight exactly what the product excels at. The advertisement is for noise canceling headphones. In the advert there is a man rowing a boat at Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is known for being very loud and in this case Bose does a great job using Niagara Falls as a location because it's a clever way of showing how the headphones the man is wearing are actually able to cancel out the noise. In the advert the man appears to be unaware that he is about to paddle over the waterfall, thus proving that headphones actually cancel out noise. I think Bose was very smart when he chose...the medium...the interpretation and I think they should have been more direct in showing what they wanted the audience to know. This shows that the product can block even the loudest noises, but it also has a negative connotation. The man is about to climb over the waterfall and finds himself in a dangerous position. Is this something Bose wants to put in the public's mind, that their product could put you in a dangerous situation? Furthermore, the advertising does a poor job of showcasing the product. The reader should immediately know what product is being advertised when they come across an ad, but Bose has only placed very small text in the top right corner saying what the product was about and an even smaller image of the headphones on the head of the reader. 'man. I personally liked the advert, but I think they could have done a much better job introducing the noise canceling headphones and being clearer about what they are selling.
