September 11 and Pearl Harbor³I don't think it's an understatement to say this is the second Pearl Harbor², Senator Charles Hagel of Nebraska told the Los Angeles Times on September 11, 2001. Pearl Harbor, the sequel, erupted on September 11, 2001 when hijacked planes destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and parts of the West Wing of the Pentagon in Washington, DC. The borders with the United States were closed and the FAA closed all of the nation's airports. People across the county woke up to what at first glance appeared to be video from a Hollywood blockbuster like "Armageddon" or "Independence Day." In reality, what we were watching were the horrifyingly real consequences of the complete destruction of world trade. Central towers. When recounting the events of September 11th, no one had any idea how terrible it truly was. Rather, people remained glued to their televisions in hopes of seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. What they received from journalists on their televisions was confusion and disbelief. More than a month later we are still holding our breath for some sort of beam, even a small one. “A huge fireball exploded… seconds later it became the attack heard around the world,” a New York firefighter told Christine Frey in an article in the New York Times on September 13, 2001. Since 9/11 the media has built its own Hollywood, its own Broadway, and built its own arena for the greatest spectacle of ideology under one roof. On September 11, Senator John McCain called... middle of paper... lending Now with new developments of anthrax in our mail system, Americans are even more confused about how to get justice for the events of September 11. We live in a passive-aggressive age where we want to punish those responsible and yet we throw food along with the bombs. The government (through the media) transcodes us into wanting to get our hands dirty with the blood of those who took so many lives on 9/11 but, in reality, we are the ones who initially fueled Osama bin Laden's fire by supplying weapons to his organization and training it to fight. How can we justify a war in Afghanistan when the culprits are not only in our country but are Americans? When the smoke clears we will be able to say whether the administration has been victorious in defeating the evildoers or there will be a bounty on their heads too??
