Acceptance and understanding are important factors to meet for people to unite. In many circumstances, it is up to the minority that joins the majority to adopt and modify its customs and practices to assimilate with the majority. However, there are some circumstances where the minority somehow manages to overpower the majority and take control. This is the situation that occurred between the natives and Europeans during the conquest of 1513. The Spanish conquest of Central and South America and Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World in 1492 brought the Spanish crown great wealth. The native inhabitants who resided in the Americas before the discovery saw what had been their home taken away and completely devoured by the Conquistas. In Defense of the Indians by Bartolomé de Las Casas and On the Cannibals by Michel Eyquem, Seigneur De Montaigne are two accounts of how the conquistasts treated the native inhabitants. The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the realistic truths of both documents and compare what each author had to say about how Europeans viewed the religion of the natives and who the real barbarians were. De Las Casas is a very important religious figure in the sixteenth century. He was born in Seville, Spain, and became closely acquainted with Christopher Columbus through de Las Casas' father, Pedro de Las Casas (PBS, 2010). Pedro de Las Casas was one of the travelers during Christopher Columbus' second expedition to the New World (PBS, 2010). At the age of 18 de Las Casas sailed to the Caribbean and was granted land and one hundred native jobs (PBS, 2010). He later returned to Spain before traveling to Italy... half of the sheet... great views on another. Both have similar reliable facts about the situation too, both believe that the real barbarians are the Europeans. Therefore, it was up to the Europeans to submit to the natives' way of life, instead of criticizing them on their religion and culture and forcing the natives to change.
