What is success? The definition of success is the achievement of a goal or purpose. The theme of success is peppered throughout Death of a Salesman. Willy Loman is obsessed with trying to succeed. However, he completely fails to achieve his goal of becoming a great salesman and being well known and liked in a large area. He focuses so much on trying to be a great salesman that he lets other areas of his life fall by the wayside. Willy Loman is a failure as a man because he cheated on his wife, had a terrible relationship with his children and was fired from a job that put his self-esteem at risk. A man should always remain faithful to his woman, whatever the circumstances. When a couple gets married they create a bond and vow to maintain this bond as long as it lasts. If a person breaks the covenant he made with the other person, his word is no longer good and many believe that a man is only as good as his word. “Biff: Anyone in there? Willy: No, that was next door. The woman laughs offstage.Biff: Someone broke into your bathroom! Willy: No, it's the next room, there's a party- The Woman, she comes in laughing...” (Miller 118-119). While Willy was in Boston on a sales trip, he decided to have some fun and cheat on his wife. He knew it was wrong but he did it anyway. A man knows what he stands for and stands by it. By cheating on his wife, Willy not only broke the oath he had made with her, but went directly against what he knew was wrong. Cheating on his wife not only ruins his relationship with his wife, but it brutally impacts his relationship with his children. Willy wants to have a good relationship with his children and wants them to love him, but he can never seem to get anything right.
