My favorite part of growing up was playing late-night games with the neighborhood kids and waiting for my dad's loud cry to come in for dinner. Older generations are even more familiar with the familiar experience of playing outdoors with their peers until dark. It would seem that fluorescent young people can't be stopped from staying out late. However, in light of new technological advances in social media, a new place to “hang out” has become increasingly popular, right from the safety of your computer room. Instead of being scolded for dirtying their acid-washed jeans in the open, today's youth are scolded straight from the kitchen for spending too many hours hanging out with their "friends" on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Researchers agree that social networking on popular websites like Facebook can have beneficial and harmful effects on both teenagers and older adults. However, as younger generations grow up using social networking sites frequently, they suffer from being immersed in the addictive, impersonal and peer-idolatrous nature of online culture, while older adults who have already acquired valuable face-to-face skills; they seem to thrive on newfound social technology. Generations who grew up listening to emerging radio and eight-track cartridges know what it means to have authentic face-to-face interactions with their peers. Today, Millennials and Generation Z are disassociating from their peers as they grow up and integrate into the daunting virtual world. Because puberty is a time of awkward changes and exponential growth in intellectual aptitude, adolescents are now hampered by the ever-present virtual world offered by Facebook, resulting... middle of paper...
