I didn't always know that teaching would be in my future. As a young student I was always interested in science and mathematics and dreamed of becoming a pediatrician or veterinarian. Throughout high school I was confident that I would study biology in college, but I was no longer interested in pursuing a medical profession. I realized that I loved high school and that I could actually imagine myself teaching someday. I entered university with an open mind and have become interested in many aspects of my biological science major over the past three years. I have been involved in the animal science department and am currently a partner in the student-run dairy farm, CREAM, which stands for Cooperative for Real Education in Agriculture Management. The group is made up of sixteen students and various consultants who manage thirty milking Holsteins and make all decisions affecting the company. I am also interested in the field of microbiology and am currently doing my undergraduate research at the Quality Milk Research Lab. Last summer I tutored a sixth grade student for his upcoming final exams. I helped him with math and biology. It was the first teaching experience I had and it immediately rekindled my interest in education. That summer I decided that I would get certified to teach, and as a result, I began my educational requirements this spring semester. As soon as I started these courses, especially EDSC 209, I knew I had made the right choice. I feel at home in high school and feel comfortable teaching and interacting with students. The job, as I see it now, is much more challenging than I thought, but I am excited to become a teacher and feel that I will excel as an educator. My initial portfolio is organized into five basic categories. First, there's a section for the recommendations and performance ratings I've collected so far. The second is the section dedicated to my contents, which includes biology, chemistry, nutrition, physics, statistics and mathematics. The third section exemplifies my dedication to working with youth.
