Topic > The Island of Equal Rights and Freedom in The Lord of...

We all want to live in a world where we have freedom, rights, opinions and democracy gives it to us. In the book Lord of the Flies, Ralph's democratic leadership style is much better than Jack's dictatorial leadership style because everyone has the same rights and that is fair. First and foremost, Ralph gives everyone on the island a chance to express their opinion and contribute. Secondly, being saved is the most important thing to Ralph. Last but not least, Jack is very self-centered and selfish. It's rude and inconsiderate. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. Ralph gives everyone on the island equal rights and freedoms. Ralph makes everyone feel worthy, but Jack makes almost everyone feel worthless. First, Ralph lets everyone on the island have a say. They can express their opinion or idea as long as they have the shell. “I will give the conch to the next person who speaks,” (Golding 31) Ralph says during an assembly. It's giving everyone the same chance to speak. On the other hand, Jack just wants the "important" people to talk. Jack tells Piggy, “Who cares what you believe, fat man” (97). This shows that Jack doesn't want Piggy to talk and that's not right. Afterwards, Ralph assigns everyone the same job and does a lot of the work himself. Ralph builds the huts with Simon and has also assigned times for several people to watch the fire. Ralph is also very caring towards the liluns. It gives them positive motivation to be saved while Jack ignores them. Therefore, Ralph makes everyone feel worthy by listening to their opinions and assigning equal work among the boys unlike Jack. Being saved is the most important thing to Ralph. He wants everyone to be saved and return to their normal lives. Life in the center of the card is fairer. First, Ralph grants everyone equal rights. This gives the kids more freedom and everyone can contribute to being saved, which is fair. Jack, on the other hand, believes that only “important” people should have rights. This makes him feel more powerful and others feel powerless, which isn't right. Secondly, Ralph considers rescue as his first priority. Being saved is very important and the boys would have been saved but Jack put out the signal fire so he could have more hunters. A ship passed and there was no signal. Ralph wants to be saved but Jack just wants power. Last but not least, Jack is very selfish and inconsiderate. He doesn't care about other kids. He just wants power. Therefore, Ralph is a better leader for the boys than Jack because he gives everyone equal rights and does what is best for them and that is right.
