Television has existed in the living room for as long as I can remember. I didn't realize the impact of television on individuals because I considered it an appliance. Although not many see the impact of television, the author named Marie Winn wrote the article “Television: The Plug-In Drug” which highlights the negative impacts of television on the family. Winn argues that television is not a good resource in the home because it complicates family relationships and rituals. Relational bonds are diminished due to the presence of many televisions in a house. With many televisions, family members pay more attention to the television than to communicating with each other. Eric Schlosser, author of "Kid Kustomers," has facts that have influenced reports from scientific studies. Some scientific studies concern advertising aimed at children and children's annoying tactics. These studies support Winn's view on how television harms our relationships, our family members, and us. The negative factors of television make me believe that television causes harm to our families. Television harms us because it doesn't give us the ability to think twice about whether we want to buy something or not. According to Winn, television affects families because it changes the way they live life. Two changes concern family relationships and individuals in families. Television decreases the family relationship between family members. In Winn's article, he takes issue with a 1949 television critic's claim that television would bring families together and pushes back against that claim, stating that "...a multi-set family was something that early writings did not they had foreseen." (Winn, p. 439). In other words, he argues that television is as bad... middle of paper... as the Superbowl. Since families cannot afford a ticket to the game while the Superbowl is on television, this allows the family to bond over a sport and the playing of commercials. This is a good thing about television, but it only happens once a year. Television has influenced family relationships. Television has negatively affected family life. The impacts of television have been supervised on its effects. If family members are willing to frequently spend time doing outdoor activities or playing games indoors and forget that television exists, relational bonds can increase. Spending time with family and a group of people you are close to creates bonding and can reduce the negative effects that television provides us. Works Cited Schlosser, Eric.
