Topic > My journal on the book, The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Journal 1 The first chapter of "The Maze Runner" really gets me excited for the rest of the book. I like how it leaves the reader with a lot of room to wonder what will happen later in the book. He has an interesting vocabulary that includes some of the slang words invented by the people of the glade. It seems that the plot of the book will accelerate very quickly as there are already many omens suggesting some unknown beast and a giant labyrinth. I predict that Thomas' arrival will trigger some sort of problem that he will have to solve. The first chapter alone had me very excited for the rest of the book. Journal 2 Looks like I was right about the plot thickening quickly. Thomas has already made an enemy, a boy named Gally. Apparently Gally has already seen Thomas and thinks it's bad news. Thomas also begins to learn more about the creatures called Grievers. Apparently a boy named Ben was stung by one of these creatures. According to Chuck he will not die but will go through an extremely painful process called change. Thomas decides he wants to go see Ben and try to get some answers from Alby and Newt. He goes to where Ben is being held and enters to find Ben in excruciating pain. His veins are a sickly green color and Ben is screaming. Newt then gets very angry because the newbies aren't allowed to see anyone go through the change. Just seeing him makes Thomas nauseous, so he leaves before something worse happens. Journal 3 As Chuck and Thomas walk towards the farm, Chuck decides to play a practical joke on someone using the bathroom. Apparently he's done it before, but this time it was Gally in the bathroom. Chuck knocked on the window so Gally would look out to see who was... middle of paper... able to take the serum and will most likely die. Thomas is taught a rather important distinction. Grievers always show up at night, but that doesn't mean they never come out during the day. Minho starts to paint a pretty sad picture, and no matter how many suggestions Thomas makes, Minho is able to say why it won't work or shut him down because they've already tried and failed. They drag Alby closer to the door, so that the Baggers can find his body in the morning. Minho admits that he has never been so scared. They have no hope of surviving. That's when they hear the noise. It's a constant buzzing sound that sounds like knives being struck together, followed by a series of clicks and moans. Minho suddenly runs away into the darkness and tells Thomas that they need to split up to increase their chances. His only advice is to keep moving.
