Topic > BOMBING IN OKLAHOMA CITY - 1360

People around the world often come together under the most negative circumstances. Once a disaster strikes, many will come together to help as best they can. The Oklahoma City bombing is just one such event that occurred nearly 19 years ago. At exactly 9:02 am a bomb was detonated on April 19, 1995. This mass murder was considered the largest terrorist attack before the attacks of September 11, 2001. The bomb was placed in a rental truck in front of the federal office Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The nation trembled as each floor of the building collapsed. The main suspect was a former army soldier, Timothy McVeigh was all responsible with some accomplices by his side. This attack occurred due to the mixture of diesel fuel and fertilizer contained in the powerful bomb. As will become apparent, the Oklahoma City bombing resulted in worldwide panic, increased security, government legislation, and injuries that will disrupt the lives of hundreds of people for years to come. Investigations began shortly after the attack with hundreds of people searching the collapsed factory looking for survivors. Many authors suggest that McVeigh and his accomplices, Terry Nichols and Micheal Fortier, left behind much evidence that led to their quick discovery. McVeigh was convicted of murder and received the death penalty by lethal injection on June 11, 2001. His accomplices, however, did not receive the punishment they deserved as Nichols who helped create the bomb only received multiple life sentences and Fortier who was aware of the bomb plot. he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Some of McVeigh's motivations included his obsession with firearms during his childhood, his distrust of the federal government, and his anger... middle of paper... but a home-grown American soldier, Timothy McVeigh and his accomplices. The number of people affected by this event is well into the thousands, including those who died, were injured, the rescue teams and the families of the victims. McVeigh and his accomplices had many reasons for his actions, but they never realized how many people they would affect for the rest of their lives. Furthermore, those who have been affected in some way will feel some sort of relief because they now know that Timothy McVeigh can no longer harm anyone. However, the victims cannot feel any kind of relief towards the punishment of his accomplices. Through this horrible event many people were able to come together to help each other. Society must start teaching the next generation about the impacts of violence at a young age to prevent such an event from happening again.
