Pain is the most common reason patients visit the emergency room. In all surveys analyzed, an increase in patient satisfaction is generally found when the patient's pain is managed in a timely manner during the visit. In a study conducted by Downey & Zun to measure the correlation, if any, between pain reduction and the level of satisfaction in patients who presented to the emergency room with pain as their chief complaint, they concluded that patients who experienced pain relief during their emergency room stay had significant increases in distress reduction and a positive outlook.
