Topic > Personal experience: My first day as a social worker

For this to happen, I know I have to play a very active role in my learning, so as I prepare my learning plan I will consult with Mike on how I will be able to achieve each of the skills on which I am assessed. Also, I need to identify some of my strengths and weaknesses. My previous experience as an assistant domestic violence counselor had given me skills in interviewing and assessment, as well as group therapy. However, the patients at WSH do not come to see me voluntarily and are also seriously mentally ill, which is a weakness. Even though I have stated that this new challenge is a weakness for me, I still possess the skills and knowledge to adapt and overcome, simply by asking questions and asking for help. I don't foresee any problems at this time, because I believe the team I work with is extremely competent and truly cares about the patients at WSH. Furthermore, the cohesion of the team is excellent and I am perfectly comfortable, I have the feeling that we have similar personalities where we are assertive, team players and have a passion for helping people. The skills I learned in the military will help me with time management, which is critical to not only keep up with my internship responsibilities, but also my responsibilities to others.
