Same-sex marriage has marital benefits. There are over a thousand elected laws in which marital status is a component. These laws offer rights, guarantees and profits to married couples: from Social Security survivor profits to elected tax breaks to elected representatives' health care and pension profits. An example of Social Security benefits married homosexuals may have is the lump sum death benefit in which a surviving spouse receives $255 from the federal government to help pay for funeral arrangements.
