Let me ask you: When writing an essay, is it easier when you can use your own ideas and opinions or research the answer for countless hours? Personally I prefer the first choice. If the topic were about myself and how I became the person I am today, I would have some ideas. Now, if the topic was based on a book I was reading in class, wondering why I think the character behaves a certain way, I would be bored out of my mind. Those essays, although they allowed me to express my opinion, I never found them interesting since everyone else had to write about the same thing. But even if I like one topic over the other, I would still have a hard time coming up with my ideas when it came to both topics. It might be very helpful for you to write an outline and make some notes for yourself. While it was helpful to you, I usually put in random thoughts or ideas that came to mind that ended up going off topic, resulting in a bad grade on the essay.
