Nixon was a worthy president and without his ability to pass laws, there would have been no Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), better relations with China and also stopped the Vietnam War. He also supported President Eisenhower's previous policies, including stopping the spread of communism and opposing the use of atomic bombs.II. BackgroundNixon ran for president against John Kennedy in the September 26, 1960 election and lost. He ran for president again and won, taking office on January 20, 1969. Nixon was subsequently re-elected twice. The second election was against Democrat George McGovern, who lost to Nixon by a landslide of 60 percent of the vote. He had planned to improve U.S. relations with China before becoming president, writing in Foreign Affairs a year before his election: “There is no place on this little planet where a billion of its potentially more people able to live in angry isolation.
