Among vertebrates, birds of the Aves class are the most remarkable, most melodious, and most beautiful. Birds with more than nine thousand species far outnumber other vertebrate groups except fish.” (Hickman PC Jr, et.al page 582). Birds are the only vertebrates that have feathers and forelimbs modified for flight, although many species do not use wings for flight. The birds can be found all over the world, including Guyana. There are many factors that influence birds in Guyana. Deforestation is one of the factors affecting birds in Guyana. “Deforestation is the clearing of forests through logging and/or burning.” (http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation). There are many causes of deforestation in Guyana and all of these causes, such as logging, mining, agricultural logging and porpoise burning which can cause forest fires, and house building, have affected one way or another. Other birds live in or around these areas that once hosted pristine forests, destroying their habitats. Deforestation affects a bird's ability to find nesting sites, materials needed to build the nest, its ability to find mates to produce the next generation, food to feed themselves and their young. One of the birds affected is the harpy eagle and there are many others such as woodpeckers. Another factor that affects birds is pesticides. Although many pesticides that have harmful effects on birds have been banned in other countries, these pesticides are still used in Guyana because they are inexpensive. These pesticides include insecticides, rodenticides, and herbicides. These pesticides harmful to birds are fat-soluble and long-lasting (remain in the environment for long periods of time) and have the ability to biomagnify i.e. pesticides......middle of paper......and on the brink of extinction and many others whose status is unknown. Deforestation, illegal trade, water pollution, pesticides and climate change are all factors affecting birds in Guyana.
