Throughout The Scarlet Letter, the reader knows that Pearl is the result of Hester and Dimmesdale's sin, but does she have a larger role in the novel? For example, some readers may understand Pearl's role in showing the themes of this novel. At the beginning of the novel, Hester commits adultery with Dimmesdale and has who she calls Pearl. Dimmesdale suffers because he keeps his sin a secret, while Hester cannot do so and is punished for it. Dimmesdale also suffers because he never manages to establish a bond with Pearl: at the end of the novel, however, when he dies, Pearl accepts him and kisses him. Later, Pearl becomes one of the richest women in the world, gets married, has a family and lives a happy life. Pearl is an important character in the story and plays an important role in showing the themes of The Scarlet Letter: Appearance vs. Reality, Isolation, and Good Can Come from Evil. A theme that Perla displays is Appearance versus Reality. The Puritan people label Pearl as a wicked child throughout the novel. In fact, they imagine her as an evil child, but in reality she is just a little girl who grows up normally like any other child. Ultimately, however, he becomes a sympathetic being after Dimmesdale's death. Hawthorne gives an idea when he describes Pearl as: "Pearl, that wild and flighty little elf, crept up to him, and taking his hand in both of hers, laid her cheek upon it; such a tender caress, and at the same time so discreet that his mother, who was watching, wondered, 'Is that my pearl?'" (115). This shows who Pearl really is; she's just an innocent girl, but people think she's the exact opposite. The author, Hawthorne, gives his input on Pearl here, We have like you... middle of the paper... it's better when she kisses him, which shows that all she really wants is his acceptance. In The Scarlet Letter it can be seen that Pearl goes through many hardships but overcomes them and benefits greatly from her ordeal. (pg. 223) Throughout the story, Pearl represents the themes of appearance versus reality, isolation, and from evil can come good. Pearl is an innocent girl who is shown as a devil, when in reality she is exactly the opposite. The community's perception of her keeps her isolated from the Puritan people, which causes her emotional pain. However, it can be seen that Pearl is the only good person who comes from Hester and Dimmesdale, and she deserves the life she gets at the end of the novel. Pearl shows many themes in the novel and proves to have a lot of depth to her character. She is the only hope the reader clings to until the end of the novel.
