The Artist and the ArtThe history of art dates back to ancient times. Works of art can be, and have been, found all over the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any material. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. The art appears to simply be a direct visual reflection of the artist's life. Therefore, it can be assumed that an artist's life experiences and beliefs directly influence his or her art. If we look at examples from different artistic periods we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art. One of the earliest examples of beliefs and traditions influencing art can be seen in ancient art. The ancient Egyptians strongly believed in life. On the other hand, they also had a greater faith in the afterlife. They believed that a corpse should be preserved as efficiently as possible. This is because they believed that the spirit, or ka, returned from time to time to the body from which it came. To preserve the body, they had to remove the internal organs so that they would not deteriorate inside the body. This is where you can see art influenced by beliefs. The four 'Canopic Jars', considered works of art, were reserved for the function of containing the internal organs. They date back to 1070-712 BC. Each vase represented a different species. They were a human, a baboon, a hawk and a jackal. They were also known as the "Four Sons of Horus". This is an example of beliefs influencing art, however, there are also examples of how life experiences can influence art. An early example of art influenced by the artist's experiences can be seen in the High Renaissance. In April 1508 Julius II called Michelangelo back to Rome, but he could not yet begin work on the papal tomb. In fact Julius II had a new job for him. It involved painting twelve figures of apostles and some decorations on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Buonarroti, who had always considered himself a sculptor, would now have to learn the art of fresco painting. One of the many pieces found on the ceiling is "The Creation of Man", known throughout the world. In this piece we can see the religious connection between the art and the artist. Michelangelo, a devout Christian, believed in God and therefore decided to paint a picture depicting the creation of m...... in the center of the card ......gh Mondrain's work does not produce emotions in the observer, the Other artists' work can create an excess of emotion. One of these artists was Andy Warhol. Warhol believed that the world also had an ugly side. It was then that he began to create works of art that represented this belief. He created art that seems shocking and sometimes disturbing. An example is "Gun" from 1981, which shows a distorted image of a gun. The image appears to be clear and crisp, provoking a bold and harsh reality regarding firearms in our society. The year it was created also shows that gun-related deaths were on the rise. You can see that Warhol used images like these to evoke a feeling within the viewer. As we see all these examples of art, we can see a clear meaning of what the artist was influenced by. By producing a graphic image, the artist would appear to be out of touch with reality or mentally disturbed. On the contrary, by producing an emotionless image, we can see that the artist created it on purpose. Overall, by examining an artist's background and history, it is shown that their experiences and beliefs influence their artwork.
