Topic > CMM: The Communication Process - 1249

Griffin states that “the actions of people in conversation are reflexively reproduced as the interaction continues. Reflexivity means that our actions have effects that impact on us and influence us." (Griffin, 2012, p. 72) Throughout the entire film Flor creates her daughter's world, which in turn creates her own. She moved to the United States for the benefit of her daughter. This in turn got her a job where she met the Claskys. This in turn exposed her daughter to upper class life. At the end of the film, her daughter had to return to her original and deeper feelings for her mother due to her infatuation with the upper class. All this was done through conversations with her daughter such as teaching moments or daily dialogues and even actions. In Kim's critique of CMM he states: “CMM notes that the manner and form of communication shapes who the interlocutors are and the relationship more than the actual words or the content of the messages themselves. During the performative process of communication, people become trapped in the “logic of meaning and action” that is formed in the reflexivity of conversations. (Kim, 2013) In the film Flor is Cristina's parent, her relationship being the way she communicates, it was more important than the words she used.
