Americans have suffered many economic, social, and political problems in the post-Civil War era. I have identified one of these types of problems that I believe were among the most important during the period 1865-1900. The economic issue that I believe had one of the greatest impacts on Americans at that time was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. The social issue that I believe greatly affected America after the Civil War is Chinese immigration. One of the biggest political problems, for me, is the Populist Party. I think the Great Railroad Strike of 1887 was a big deal because it made Americans realize how deeply Americans were invested in railroads. At the time, the largest investment banking firm in America, Jay Cooke and Company, was pouring a disproportionate amount of depositors' funds into railroads. When Cooke's company failed, much of the country was thrown into a frenzy; but the worst hit were the railways, in terms of 10% wage cuts, mistrust of capitalists and poor working conditions. The railways' shortcomings did not go unnoticed by workers, resulting in numerous strikes that prevented many trains from running. Trains were the primary means of shipping almost all goods, which meant that everything that needed to be shipped arrived late and in smaller quantities, or was never received at all. The government soon became frustrated and sent militia units to restore order, but the men refused to use force against the workers. Then the governors sent in National Guard regiments, which were attacked by citizens as they marched along the streets. These riots caused several deaths and others injuries. After more than a month of continuous rioting, the president, Rutherford B. Hayes, sent Fed... in the middle of the paper... members spoke openly of the need for poor whites and poor blacks to put aside racial indifferences and join in their fight. It is clear that Americans were involved in many issues after the Civil War, but I feel these were the most important. The Great Rail Strike demonstrated how ingrained the railroad was in American civilization and how hard they could fall if an accident occurred in the rail system. The immigration of the Chinese and the protest of most Americans demonstrated that, no matter what the newspapers said after the Civil War, America was still unable to cope with the idea of racial integration. And finally, the Populist Party has shown both Republicans and Democrats that not only do they not cover all the important issues in American society, but that citizens who know what needs to be done could oppose the major parties..
