Topic > Negative effects of shoplifting - 1117

“The main findings of this research are that the sex of the shoplifter and the sex of the subject had little effect on reporting levels, while the appearance of the shoplifter had a greater independent effect on levels of signaling” (Steffensmeier & Terry, 1973: 424). People react differently to shoplifting, but in this newspaper article, most of the people reported as shoplifters looked a little dirty. These people who weren't actually shoplifting in real life had been made up to look like they were coming in from the street and were the ones most reported as shoplifting, the other people who were dressed up, but they also hadn't been reported as shoplifting as much as the others people. Most people interviewed, however, this is not the case with many shoplifters, as they will continue to shoplift even after the intervention. Along with the interventions there are assessments that shoplifters will need to undergo to help them get the right treatment that will help them stop the urge to shoplift. There are many assessment categories that social workers will address with arrested shoplifters, one of the assessment categories is impulsivity. “…The assessment that a shoplifter's behavior was impulsive is usually incomplete because the professional was unable to identify the motivating factor” (Schwartz & Wood, 1991: 237). Usually, if a shoplifter were to act impulsively and take something, they will not have a rational reason as to why they did so. They will simply say that they could have bought it, because they had the money to buy it, but they decided to steal it for some unknown reason. Shoplifters themselves don't even realize why they act this way. Perhaps when these methods are experimentally evaluated a preferred treatment methodology will emerge” (Glasscock, Rapoff, & Christophersen, 1988: 274). This simply means that even if there were ways to prevent a shoplifter from shoplifting again, there is no way to completely prevent them from shoplifting again. Hopefully, a method will be developed that will help shoplifters never shoplift again, but a person can only hope that this will happen one day. The first main point presented was about apprehension. Arresting a shoplifter might seem easier than it actually is, there are people who manage to get away with it for years before getting caught. When they are finally arrested, they believe they never did anything wrong, even though it cost many stores thousands of dollars. The second main point presented was about reactions to shoplifters. There are some people who would be willing to give up on a shoplifter in a heartbeat, but then there are other people who don't want to get into that kind of mess and have never reported a shoplifter. Many more people would report a shoplifter if they looked dirty than if they looked better dressed
