It is a nonprofit organization governed by a membership group of doctors, nurses, administrators, and a consumer advocate and educator. They focus on public health care to ensure that all people receive safe, effective, high-quality care. The Joint Commission plays a huge role in the healthcare industry by establishing patient safety goals and standards that facilities must meet (The Joint Commission, 2014). The Joint Commission has implemented national patient safety goals. These objectives aim at patient safety; however, medical personnel are also included. Goals also allow agencies to address areas where they have safety concerns (The Joint Commission, 2014). In relation to a perioperative client, goals include using two correct patient identifiers, such as the client's name and date of birth, labeling medications and containers, maintaining and communicating accurate client medication information, and finally using of evidence-based practices to prevent surgical infections. Performing customer verification by each team member will ensure that the correct customer and process match. In the surgical field, the use of labeled drugs and containers is necessary. This follows the principles of safe drug administration but prevents a medication error. To prevent error and be safe, we need to know what each item is in the room to ensure the client is receiving the proper medications and/or… middle of paper… that no bleeding risk has been identified.
