"Civil disobedience: refusal to obey government requests or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government" - Merriam-Webster dictionary definitionIn the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas lives in a society without homelessness, without racism and without war, but at what cost? No one in this Community has feelings because of the pills that the leaders of this society make them take. But no one cares because they don't know they have options. Jonas is the only one who wonders what this means for his community and for himself. It is intuitively asked that no one experiences strong emotions; anger, sadness, loneliness, happiness, love. They may experience only superficial versions of some of these emotions. Every choice of the Community is canceled with a single sip of the mandatory pill. In some cases, this could be considered a positive change because no one feels an emotion strong enough to incite war. It also means there is no jealousy but the downside is that it means no one loves each other either. There are no love encounters. Each couple is chosen. There is no such thing as family because no one cares enough. The community has no homeless people because there is no overpopulation problem. The Communities' solution is to send the members "elsewhere" by releasing them, which means they are put to death. Even the smallest offenders are “released,” which reduces the potential prisoner population. They also release babies who don't sleep through the night. Furthermore, if the birth mother has twins, the one who weighs less is put to death. There is no racism because the pills take care of that too and make sure that no one can color themselves. Jonas ...... half of the document ...... t of change for the Community because of and how, through Jonas's decisions, he could have a positive impact on the way of life of the Community by letting people exercise free choice about how they lived their life. In the novel The Giver, Lois Lowry implies that civil disobedience is sometimes necessary to improve society's way of life. This topic is seen all over the world today, people use civil disobedience every day when standing up for what they believe in and we will continue to do so until the world is up to their standards. The Giver once said, “There is nothing we can do. It's always been like this. Before me, before you, before those who came before you. Back and back and back. but Jonas proved him wrong. It showed him that there could be a change even after all that time and I hope that maybe our world will have someone who will prove all the cynics wrong too.
