The suicide rate with a firearm is much higher than the actual murder rate and this can be lowered by passing physical and mental tests conducted by your doctor. These tests will demonstrate that the person receiving the gun is mentally strong or has no history of mental illness. As the article Guns and Suicides shows, “In 2010 in the United States, 19,392 people committed suicide by firearms, compared to 11,078 killed by others (Guns & Suicide The Hidden Toll). Mental illness can be caused by alcoholism, abuse and family history, but a medical checkup can help reduce the number to a certain extent. Additionally, the Administration is proposing a new investment of $500 million to increase access to mental health care (The Fact Sheet). This investment will cause a huge change in the healthcare system and treat people with medical conditions to reduce the rate of firearm-related suicides.
