I agree with Jared Diamond that the geographical advantages of the Europeans made the Spanish conquistadors accidental conquerors. The geographical location of Europe allowed the countries of that time to develop the most modern weapons for that time. Another boon came from the Chinese in the form of gunpowder and Arab technology used to make firearms. Because of so much travel during that time, diseases spread much more rapidly and allowed some people to develop immunity to disease (Diamond). These simple factors, shaped by the advantages of different regions of Eurasia, allowed a small group of Spanish conquistadors to conquer the powerful Inca empire. The invading conquistadors had a great advantage over the Inca empire when it came to weapons, because the Spanish possessed the newest and deadliest weapons of the time. Because of Europe's proximity to the Fertile Crescent, they were able to learn how to engineer steel to make stronger, sharper swords. In addition to being in proximity to the Fertile Crescent, Europeans also possessed writing, which allowed information to spread much wider, more accurately, and in more detail than it could have been if transmitted orally (Diamond 78). The written word also provided Pizarro with records of Cortez's battles with the Aztecs that he was able to use to create battle strategies that he knew would be successful in his conquests of the New World (Diamond). Additionally, the written word allowed swordsmiths in Europe to create a new type of sword known as the rapier, and it was a sword designed for hand-to-hand combat. This was a light, flexible and durable sword to withstand combat without breaking... middle of paper......develop immunity to these diseases that would be brought to the New World, (Diamond) . Eurasia was geographically blessed with a landscape and vast resources that allowed the population to thrive, develop new and advanced technologies, and survive the epidemics of the Middle Ages, and it was these geographically blessed factors that allowed the Spanish to become accidental conquerors in the New World .
