Severe damage to psychological health could lead some adolescents to abuse alcohol and drugs. As a result, adolescents turn to substance abuse as a way to cope with the psychological stress caused by bullying. Over time, substance abuse could lead to a life of alcoholism, drug addiction, and even death. “Being bullied at school makes a teenager more likely to abuse alcohol. Students in grades 7 to 12 were 1.5 times more likely to abuse alcohol if they had been bullied.” (Promises addiction treatment, “Bullied Teens Seek Comfort in Alcohol and Drugs” 2) Therefore, when teens are bullied, they try alcohol and drugs as a way to mask and cope with their emotional problems. When a victim of bullying feels bullied, they think and feel powerless to stop it. For this reason, bullies socially separating their victims during a time when socializing with their friends and peers is particularly significant. Victims think that drugs and alcohol are a decent way to relieve the emotional stress caused by isolation and rejection
