There were racial problems in rural southern Georgia. Walker discusses the stereotype that Celie went through as the daughter of a successful store owner, run by a white man to whom Celie had no claim. Black characters and community have been stereotyped throughout their lives as having human rights (Walker 88-89). Walker addresses the struggle between the social class of blacks and whites, blacks were poor and whites were rich. This captures the deep roots of Southern discrimination against blacks. African American women have gone through the misery and pain of racism of being discriminated against based on the color of their skin. Another major racist issue that Hurston represents in "The Color Purple" is when Sofia tells the mayor's wife who says "hell no" that her children work for her, Sofia was beaten up for fighting back against a white man (Walker 87). Racism and discrimination in black culture had no basic rights as whites instead suffered mistreatment to the point of losing their morals
